There is an old adage: ‘what gets measured gets done’.
Businesses who consistently reach their goals typically focus a lot of attention on getting a handful of key activities right. These activities are called ‘critical success factors’. For a tradesperson one critical success factor could be maximising chargeable hours, for a fast food outlet it could be minimising wastage, for a technology company it could be innovative ideas, and for a number of businesses it could be the ability of the person answering the phone to resolve queries.
Performance against the critical success factors is measured using key performance indicators or ‘KPIs’. To be effective, KPIs are calculated regularly and concerning trends are addressed promptly. In addition, everyone working in the business makes it their priority to excel at the critical success factors. Ideally each business, regardless of size, would have a maximum of 10 KPIs and many of these would be measured daily.
At Shifting Focus Business Consulting we help businesses reach their goals by introducing effective KPI measurement systems that help each person in the business focus their energies on what is important.
